emperor moth

The Emperor is a large distinctive day flying moth. This is the first we have caught here (though I have heard of others in the area).

Ermines are also a common species the aptly named white ermine is a paticularly handsome moth.

The Bordered Straw is another distinctive moth .

We catch a considerable number of footman moths during the year- the 4 dotted(right) is probably the least common of the family.

On a good night in summer we catch up to 60 different species in the moth trap - several hundred species in a year.
